One of the most common bathroom plumbing DIY projects is a 20-minute repair to a leaky faucet usually caused by a worn valve-stem assembly.
Buy a valve-stem assembly and an O-ring kit. First, shut off the hot and cold-water valves under the sink. Then pop the cap off the faucet, remove the single screw to free the lever, and move the lever back and forth gently to pull it up.
Take your slip-joint pliers to free the retainer nut, replace the O-rings and slide the new ones on then remove the cartridge noting where the notches line up. Use pliers to wriggle out the cartridge and replace with the new one.
Reverse the order to put the lever back on, and test your job!
Bathroom Plumbing Ottawa Tip #2: Running Toilet
Bathroom Plumbing for your Ottawa home is easy with these foolproof instructions to fix a running toilet. The culprit is usually a worn $5.00 rubber flapper valve located in the bottom of the tank.
Shut off the water supply line to the tank and put on the new flapper but be careful not to break the barbed plastic pin when assembling and that’s it!
Bathroom Plumbing Ottawa Tip #4 – Replace a Broken Toilet
Most bathroom plumbing DIYers can replace a broken toilet, too.
- Prep the job. Shut off water supply and take the water out of the tank and bowl. Pop the caps at the base of the bowl, and remove nuts with an open-ended wrench. Disconnect the toilet water supply from the toilet stop.
- Take off the toilet. Shift it back and forth. Lift off, plug the flange with a rag, and clean the wax off the flange.
- Install wax seal and bolts. Remove flange rag and put in wax seal and new toilet bolts pointing upwards.
- Attach the tank to the bowl. Then put in the bolts and tighten.
- Install the new toilet. Slowly set the tank and bowl onto the wax seal, line-up bolts to mounting holes, then tighten the bolts. Reconnect toilet supply to the tank, refill the tank and adjust water levels. You’re done!
