Handy Summer Plumbing Tips

Ahhhhh Summer is in full swing Ottawa and the folks here at John the plumber Ottawa have some great summer plumbing tips for you. You may not think that your plumbing should be attended to in the summer but there are many little things that any homeowner can do to ensure that things run smoothly.

Water Wastage

One of the main things that we’re going to talk about is water wastage. Having the kids at home all day during the summer means more wear and tear on existing plumbing and water wastage throughout – especially the back yard! Kids are not always too careful when it comes to turning off the taps inside and outside the house, especially when in the middle of a good neighbourhood water fight in Ottawa!. All that playing outside with the hose, filling up kiddie pools and other moments of summer fun might leave some outdoor and indoor taps dripping. You would be surprised how much this can drive your water bill up.

Toilet Paper

Kids (and guests!) notoriously also use way too much toilet paper in the bathroom. Teach them early about how this is bad for the toilet and you could be spared a hefty unblocking bill!

Washing Machines

Washing machines also get a lot more use in the summer as there are always more things to wash in the summertime. Think muddy shorts and beach blankets. We recommend always giving a visual inspection to the hoses behind your washing machine every few months to make sure there are no mysterious drips. Also, it is a great idea to make sure you are doing the washing when you are at home. Washing machines can flood a basement in a hurry, and we have seen the water shut off sensor has been known to go on more than one occasion.

The Garburator

John the Plumber Ottawa  also recommends to be nice to your garburator. Watermelon rinds, corn cob, T bones and excessive grease from the barbecue can all wreak havoc on your garburator and kitchen sink drain pipes.

Of course, keeping a good eye on your outdoor sprinkler system and outdoor sewer system is always a great idea. No point wasting water watering the sidewalk! Ottawa is also known for some fantastic summer storms at these can be a huge burden on you sewer systems.

Leaky Pipes

Last but not least, make sure your indoor shutoffs for your outdoor hose bibs are not leaking! Imagine filling up your pool and consequently filling up your basement all the same time! And yes, we have actually seen this happen in Ottawa!
