Plumbing Before Grilling

Helloooo Kingston! Compared to most winters, the 1000 Islands hasn’t taken its usual beating this season. Much of the population is already looking ahead to spring and everything that comes with it. We Canadians are very serious people about grilling our meat outside. Getting ones BBQ up and running again or purchasing a new one is at the top of many a home owner’s list.

Our Kingston plumbers are all for BBQ season to begin as soon as possible, but we also want you to enjoy the warmer season with your friends and family safely. There are two types of gas BBQ’s: Portable and Stationary. Today, we are blogging about the different safety measures that need to be taken into account between portable and stationary BBQ’s along with a few other safety tips.

The Portable BBQ

These BBQ’s are less expensive and easy enough to move around. They come on wheels and are powered by disposable gas or butane canister – people are seen lugging them around all the time. You need to ensure wherever you want to set up your BBQ for grilling that the ground is flat and solid underneath so it can’t rock. You also need to ensure that there is enough room for air to circulate around the entire BBQ’s structure, so don’t place it too close/flush to your home if it’s on your patio or deck.

As far as actually lighting these barbecues goes, it isn’t a difficult task, but you must remember to repeat the necessary steps the same way every time so that you eliminate what could be a hazardous situation – steps are generally as follows:

Once the gas has been burning for a bit and your grill is heated you are able to close the lid. It is critical that you never leave your BBQ unattended any small children should be kept an eye on as well/back from the BBQ. These BBQ’s are very popular and work very well, just follow the steps we have mentioned and read your owner instruction manual thoroughly before your first usage – you’ll be grilling those steaks to perfection safely in no time flat!

Stationary BBQ’s

Stationary BBQ’s with fitted designs built into an enclosure or a wall are more expensive and require its installation to be handled by a professional installer. As opposed to portable BBQ’s that are powered by a disposable tank, stationary BBQ’s require lines to be attached to your gas mains. If you are not a licensed plumber or gas fitter we strongly suggest that you DO NOT attempt to do this without professional help. Lack of proper training while working with gas and installing a stationary BBQ can turn into a very dangerous situation quickly – please don’t try it!
