Our Kingston Plumbers offer advice on when to change your hot water tank and what you should consider doing for Hot Water Tank maintenance.
Your hot water tank is one of the most important fixtures in your home. Have you ever ran out of hot water before? It’s no fun taking cold showers….just ask your dog if you have ever bathed him with the garden hose.
So how is that you know when it’s time to change your hot water tank? There are a few indicators that you can watch out for.
Rusted Hot Water Tank
A hot water tank that is showing signs of rust along the tank, is a real threat to flood your home. A hot water tank will eventually begin to rust out after ten years or so. The manufacturers mostly warranty them for 7-8 years, so that should give you a good indication of when things might start to go wrong with your hot water tank. When a hot water tank is showing signs of rust, there’s a pretty strong chance that it’s about to let go, and cause some major damage. When a hot water tank rusts out, the tank will empty onto your floor. It gets worse though. Our Kingston plumbers say that if you’re not home when this happens, or if you’re unaware that it is happening, the water will continue trying to fill the hot water tank, and will continue to flood your home until you realize what is happening.
The best course of action is to change out your tank the first chance that you can when you see rust.
Rusty Water Coming Out of The Hot Faucets in Your Home
Another sign that your hot water tank is beginning to rust internally is if the hot water coming out of your taps is coloured or stained brown. If it’s in fact your hot water tank, you will only see this rusty water in the hot water. If you have it coming out of both the hot and the cold, then you’ve most likely up against a different issue.
The same warnings apply when you have rusty hot water. If your tank rusts out it will be disastrous. Call our Kingston plumbers immediately, and book an appointment for as soon as you can.
When Your Tank is Over 8 Years Old and Needs to be Serviced
When your hot water tank reaches a certain age, and your warranty is over, it’s time to start thinking about replacing it. If it’s not showing signs of rust, then you should keep going with it. If you find yourself in the situation where you need to service the tank, say replacing an element or something similar, you may want to just change the tank entirely if it’s over 8 years old. There’s no point in putting money into an aging tank that’s going to continue having problems as it ages. Hot water tanks aren’t expensive enough to invest in repairs on an old tank.
