Our plumbers say that you should know where your main water valve is, and how to operate it
In a plumbing emergency, knowing where your main shut off valve is, and how to operate it, can be a life saver during a flood. You should know how to turn your water off to your home. What are the potential situations where you could end up with a flood, and need to know where your valve is located? There are many,
• Water leaking through your ceiling
• Water leaking from a light fixture in your ceiling
• Water all over your basement floor
• When pipes are frozen
• When you have a plumbing emergency and you don’t know what to do.
Your water shut off valve will be located directly above or below your water meter. Your water meter should be located on the street side of your home, in the basement. Somewhere along the exterior wall, on the side of the house that is closest to the road, is where you will find your water meter as well as your main shutoff valves. I say valves because according to the plumbing code, there are supposed to be two of these. Often times though, there is just one.
Plumbers in Kingston say two valves are better than one
In the photo above, you can see your water meter, and two green handled shut off valves. You could potentially shut off either of these valves and the flow of water into your house would stop. If you only have one shut off valve, then close that one. Turn the handle clockwise to close the valve.
Knowing where your shutoff valve is located within your home can help you prevent major damage to your Kingston home. Turing the valve off will stop the flow of water immediately, allowing you time to schedule one of our Kingston plumbers to your home. Give us a call today to schedule a plumber at 343-477-1970
