What is the Backflow Prevention Program?
The backflow prevention program has started in Nepean. Private property owners began being notified in 2018 so they can comply with the new timelines and laws. So what is this backflow prevention program? Backflow is unclean or used water that flows back into the city’s water supply from your property. This can cause contamination in the distribution of the drinking water. A backflow device is required to be installed so this won’t happen. The program won’t affect everyone, mainly commercial, institutional and multi-residential properties such as apartments, hotels, hospitals, etc.
Certain testing will need to be carried out to determine if the severity is high or moderate. This will need to be done every 5 years and the backflow device will need to be checked annually. One of our qualified Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) surveyors will be necessary to carry out site surveys and install these devices.
Why is the Backflow Prevention Program Needed?
The city of Ottawa and it’s surrounding areas need to protect our drinking water from contamination. Certain strict guidelines and standards have been put in place to do this. And everything needs to be under CSA compliance.
