Water Heater Troubleshooting

What Is Your Water Heater Doing?

Water heater problems can show up in different ways. If something doesn’t seem right, the symptoms below can be a sign that it’s time to have your water heater inspected by a plumber.

01

No Hot Water

Turning on the hot tap and getting nothing but cold water is one of the clearest signs that your water heater needs attention.

No Heat
02

Not Enough Hot Water

Your water starts hot but turns cold much sooner than expected, making showers and everyday household use frustrating.

Runs Cold
03

Water Around the Tank

Moisture, dripping or pooling water around your water heater should be investigated before the problem has a chance to get worse.

Possible Leak
04

Popping or Rumbling

New or unusually loud noises coming from the water heater can indicate sediment buildup or another issue that needs to be checked.

Strange Noises
05

Changing Water Temperature

Hot water that becomes unexpectedly hotter, cooler or inconsistent can point to a problem with the water heater or its controls.

Inconsistent Heat
06

Discoloured Hot Water

If your hot water suddenly looks rusty, cloudy or otherwise unusual, it’s worth having the water heater and plumbing checked.

Repair or Replace?

Does Your Water Heater Need a Repair—or Is It Time for a New One?

A water heater problem doesn't automatically mean you need a new system. The right choice depends on what has failed, the condition of the water heater and whether repairing it still makes practical sense.

Option One

Water Heater Repair

If the water heater itself is still in serviceable condition, repairing the problem may be the sensible way to get your hot water back.

No hot water A plumber can diagnose why the system has stopped producing hot water.

Inconsistent temperatures Temperature and performance problems don't necessarily mean the entire unit has failed.

Unusual noises Popping, rumbling and other new sounds are worth investigating before making a replacement decision.

Repairable components Depending on the diagnosis, the problem may involve a component rather than the complete water heater.

Book a Water Heater Inspection
Option Two

Water Heater Replacement

Sometimes putting more money into an existing water heater isn't the best long-term choice. That's when it makes sense to discuss replacement options.

Recurring problems Repeated service calls can be a reason to consider whether replacement offers better value.

Deteriorating tank The condition of the tank itself is an important part of the repair-versus-replace decision.

Poor performance A system that no longer keeps up with your household's hot-water needs may warrant another option.

Changing your setup Replacement can also be an opportunity to reconsider the type or configuration of your water-heating system.

💧 Urgent Water Heater Leak

“I called them as soon as then opened hoping to get an appointment right away since pipe connecting to my water heater burst and flooded my entire basement and they worked hard to get someone there as soon as possible on the same day even though they were booked up completely for that day.

This happened on a Friday and I thought they would joy make it here until Monday but they managed to fit me in and fixed the problem so I was not without hot water for a few days and I could turn my water back on without more flooding.

It was very much appreciated on a very stressful day. Debbie who made the appointment was amazing and the guy they sent I think his name was Craig was also very friendly and professional and did a great job.”

Water Heater Questions

Water Heater Repair FAQs for Nepean Homeowners

No hot water, a leaking tank or a system that suddenly isn't working properly? Here are answers to some common questions about water heater problems, repairs and replacement.

01 Why did my water heater suddenly stop making hot water?

A loss of hot water can have several possible causes, and the problem depends partly on the type of water heater you have. Rather than assuming the entire water heater needs to be replaced, a plumber can inspect the system and determine what has stopped working.

02 Can a broken water heater be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?

Not every water heater problem requires replacement. Whether repair makes sense depends on what has failed, the condition of the water heater and the nature of the problem. John The Plumber can inspect your water heater and explain the practical repair or replacement options.

03 Why is there water around the bottom of my water heater?

Water around a water heater does not necessarily tell you exactly where the leak is coming from. The source could be associated with the tank, a connection or another part of the surrounding plumbing. Because leaking water can cause property damage, it is a good idea to have the source identified rather than assuming it is harmless.

04 Why does my hot water run out so quickly?

If you used to have enough hot water and now it runs cold much sooner, something may have changed with the water heater or its performance. A plumber can inspect the system and help determine why it is no longer keeping up with your household's hot-water needs.

05 What should I do if my water heater is leaking badly?

A significant water heater leak should be treated as an urgent plumbing problem, especially if water is spreading into the surrounding area. Avoid contact with electrical equipment or unsafe areas and contact a plumber for help. If the situation is urgent, visit our Nepean emergency plumbing page.

06 Do you repair tankless water heaters in Nepean?

John The Plumber provides water heater services in Nepean that include troubleshooting tankless water heater problems. If your tankless system is not producing hot water or is behaving differently than usual, schedule a service visit so the problem can be inspected.

07 Is it normal for a water heater to make popping or rumbling noises?

Water heaters can make some noise during normal operation, but a new, unusually loud or persistent popping or rumbling sound is worth investigating. If the sound has changed noticeably or is happening along with poor hot-water performance, have the water heater inspected.

08 Can I replace my tank water heater with a tankless water heater?

A tankless system may be an option when replacing a traditional tank water heater, but the right setup depends on the home and the requirements of the new system. One potential advantage is the amount of floor space that can be freed up when large storage tanks are removed. A plumber can assess the existing setup and discuss whether tankless makes sense for your home.

Water Heater in Fisher Heights, Nepean

A returning client in Fisher Heights called us when their water heater finally gave out, and we got to work.

We swapped in a Bradford White 40-gallon natural draft gas water heater. Solid, reliable, and a good fit for the space. While we were at it, we replaced the mixing valve as well. That matters more than people realize. A mixing valve controls the temperature of the hot water coming out of your taps, keeping it safe and consistent. The old one came out, a new one went in, right alongside the tank install.

Fresh copper fittings, everything properly joined up top, and a new tank sitting squarely in place. The utility room feels tidy again.

This client has been with us for a while, and it was good to take care of them again. That kind of trust means a lot to us.

If your water heater is showing its age or you have noticed hot water temperatures running inconsistent, we are happy to take a look. Give us a call at 613-518-6114.

Water Heater in Crestview, Nepean,

Water Heater in Crestview, Nepean

The before photo tells the story pretty clearly. No water heater at all, just a tangle of copper lines, black ABS pipe, and a pair of yellow-tagged connections waiting in a tight basement corner. The old unit was already gone by the time we arrived, but the space still needed to be sorted out properly before anything new went in.

For this Crestview home, we installed a 50-gallon Bradford White power vent water heater. Power vent units are a solid choice in basements where traditional venting isn't practical. The blower on top pushes exhaust gases out horizontally through PVC, which gives a lot more flexibility with where the unit can sit.

We also added a proper shut-off valve for the tank. It's a small thing, but it matters. If there's ever a leak or a future repair needed, that valve means the water gets stopped fast, right at the source, without hunting around for another way to isolate the system.

The after photo shows the Bradford White sitting clean and upright, copper supply lines sweeping down neatly into the top of the unit, and the power vent motor seated at the top ready to do its job. Tidy install in a snug space.

If your water heater is aging out or you're just not getting reliable hot water, we're happy to take a look. Give us a call at 613-518-6114.
