What does a Backwater Valve do?
Simply put, a Backwater Valve (aka Backflow or Sewer backup valve) is a valve that we can install on your sewer line that prevents water and waste from coming back. Anything you flush will have a one-way ticket out of your home, so you will never have to worry about sewage and other nastiness from the sewers rising from the drains and flooding your basement.
Your plumbing is designed so that the pipes from your home are sloped and declined. The idea here is that gravity does the work. It’s a great system, except when the sewers aren’t functioning properly. Damage, construction, heavy rains, heavy melts, and so on, can all be the cause of a malfunctioning sewer system. If the waste and water can’t be guided away through the sewers, there’s a good chance the pipes will fill up and you’ll find yourself in a disgusting and unhealthy situation.
Backwater valves are fairly inexpensive, and that’s largely due to the simplicity of the device. Inside the valve, there is a flap with a float built-in. If the water level rises, the flap will rise with it and close the pipe. Gravity never fails. As long as the pipes are functioning normally, your wastewater will flow over the flap. It will only rise if the water comes is blocked or, worse yet, comes back up! Either way, the backwater valve is your friend and will protect you.

- For private sanitary services, the home must have been built before January 2, 2012.
- The Protective Plumbing Device must be a new installation, not a replacement, repair, or maintenance of a pre-existing PPD.
- Property taxes must be up to date.
- The work cannot start before the application is completed and approved.
