What a Rough-In Includes

What Gets Included in a Plumbing Rough-In?

A plumbing rough-in is the stage where the hidden parts of the plumbing system are positioned and connected before walls, floors and finished fixtures are installed.

💧
Water Supply

Hot & Cold Water Lines

Supply lines are routed to the planned fixture locations so sinks, showers, tubs, toilets and appliances can be connected later.

Drainage

Drain & Waste Piping

Drain lines are positioned for each fixture and connected into the home’s drainage system with the required slope and layout.

Venting

Plumbing Vent Connections

Vent piping is incorporated where required so the drainage system can operate properly once the finished fixtures are connected.

📐
Layout

Fixture Locations & Heights

Plumbing connections need to line up with the planned location and dimensions of vanities, toilets, showers, tubs and other fixtures.

🚰
Water Control

Shutoff & Connection Points

Accessible fixture connections and shutoff arrangements are planned so the finished plumbing can be installed and serviced properly.

Ready for the Next Stage

Testing & Rough-In Completion

Once the piping is installed, the system is checked so the project can move toward inspections, finishing work and fixture installation.

Renovation Planning

When Should the Plumber Get Involved in Your Renovation?

Earlier is usually better. Plumbing rough-ins depend on fixture locations, wall layouts, drain routes and access to water lines, so waiting too long can make changes more difficult.

John The Plumber & Drain Cleaning can work with homeowners, contractors and builders to plan the rough-in before finished surfaces are installed.

01
Planning Stage

Confirm the Room Layout

Decide where major fixtures such as toilets, vanities, showers, tubs, sinks and appliances are expected to go.

02
Before Rough-In

Gather Fixture Specifications

If you already know which fixtures you are using, dimensions and manufacturer specifications can help with accurate plumbing placement.

03
Walls & Floors Open

Complete the Plumbing Rough-In

Water lines, drains, vents and fixture connections can be installed while the plumbing is still accessible.

04
Before Finishing

Check Placement Before Closing Everything

This is the time to make sure the plumbing lines up with the intended fixture layout before drywall, flooring and other finished surfaces are installed.

Contracted JtP to update my plumbing, rough in new drains and water lines, and install a tub as part of an upstairs bathroom remodel. Working with Billy was easy- very informative and focused on solutions to make my vision come to reality. Responsive by email/phone when discussing the estimate, and very helpful during our second meeting to lay out a game plan (+++points to this since it's a DIY reno). Arrived promptly on the day of with a team of Alex and Eric. Very professional crew- knowledgeable, friendly, approachable, hardworking, and solutions-oriented. Very respectful in the house too- mindful that we work from home and tidied the work areas as they executed the day-long mission.

Basement plumbing rough-in.

In preparation for a bathroom (toilet, shower, vanity) in the basement of our new house, we called John The Plumber and spoke with Sherrie who co-ordinated everything.

Billy came out to quote on what was going to be a 3 day job of jack hammering the cement floor, installing a new pit and pump, rouging in all the drains under the cement floor, installing the water pipes and vent lines etc. etc.

We finalised all the plans with Sherrie. She was very accommodating as we arranged a time to do the work when we were ready.

Not sure of all the names of those that worked on our job but Billy & Cameron (to name just a few) came out and they were absolutely fantastic, professional and simply really nice guys. Answered all the questions we had and explained everything well.

The job was completed on time (3 days) and we were more than happy with the results and more than happy with the amazing crew that worked tirelessly in our basement for 3 days.

I would definitely recommend John The Plumber and will not hesitate in calling them again. Thank you all.

Plumbing Rough-In FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Plumbing Rough-Ins in Ottawa

Helpful answers about renovation timing, fixture placement, basement plumbing, inspections, rough-in planning and what happens before the finished fixtures are installed.

When does the plumbing rough-in happen during a renovation?

Rough-in plumbing is generally completed after the basic layout and framing are established but before drywall, finished flooring, cabinets and other surfaces close access to the plumbing. The exact timing depends on the project and how the other trades are being coordinated.

Do I need to choose my fixtures before the rough-in?

It is very helpful. Fixture dimensions and manufacturer specifications can affect the position of water supplies, drains, valves and other connections. If you already know which vanity, toilet, tub, shower or appliance you plan to use, having those specifications available can help with accurate placement.

Can you rough-in a basement bathroom where there is no plumbing now?

In many homes, yes. The project may involve creating new drain connections, water supply lines, venting and fixture locations for a toilet, vanity, shower or tub. If the drain plumbing needs to run below the basement floor, concrete may need to be opened to install the required piping.

Can plumbing rough-ins be installed under a concrete basement floor?

Yes, depending on the project. Basement bathroom rough-ins often involve opening sections of concrete so new drain piping can be installed below the slab. Once the underground plumbing work is completed, the floor can move toward the next stage of the project.

What plumbing is included in a bathroom rough-in?

A bathroom rough-in can include hot and cold water supplies, drains, venting and fixture connections for toilets, vanities, showers, tubs and other bathroom plumbing. The exact layout depends on the fixtures and room design.

Do you provide kitchen and laundry rough-ins too?

Yes. Rough-in plumbing can also be completed for kitchens, laundry rooms, utility sinks and other spaces requiring new water supply or drainage. Kitchen projects may include sink, dishwasher or refrigerator connections, while laundry areas may require washer supplies, drains and utility sink plumbing.

Can I change fixture locations after the rough-in is completed?

Sometimes, but changes can become more difficult and expensive once plumbing has been installed and walls or floors begin closing. That is why it is best to finalize major fixture locations as early as practical.

Do plumbing rough-ins need to be inspected?

Inspection requirements depend on the scope of the project and applicable local requirements. Rough-in plumbing is commonly completed while the piping is still accessible so required inspections or checks can take place before finished surfaces are installed.

Do you work with contractors and builders?

Yes. John The Plumber & Drain Cleaning works with homeowners, renovators, contractors and builders on residential rough-in projects. Coordinating the plumbing stage with framing, electrical, inspections and finishing work can help keep the project moving smoothly.

Can you work with a homeowner doing a DIY renovation?

Yes. If you are managing your own renovation, we can discuss the planned layout, fixture locations and plumbing requirements so the rough-in work fits the project. Having measurements, plans and fixture specifications available can be especially helpful.

What happens after the plumbing rough-in is finished?

Once the rough-in stage is complete and any required inspections or project checks are finished, the renovation can continue with insulation, drywall, flooring, tile, cabinetry and other finishing work. The finished plumbing fixtures are connected later when the room is ready.

Can you install the finished fixtures after the rough-in?

Yes, depending on the project. John The Plumber & Drain Cleaning provides a wide range of plumbing services in Ottawa , including fixture installation once the space is ready for the finishing stage.

Is rough-in plumbing covered by a warranty?

John The Plumber & Drain Cleaning stands behind its workmanship with an industry-leading warranty. The specific coverage can depend on the work performed and the materials involved, so our team can explain the applicable warranty for your project.

Do you provide plumbing rough-in services throughout Ottawa?

Yes. John The Plumber & Drain Cleaning is located in Ottawa West and provides residential plumbing rough-in services throughout Ottawa. Call 613-686-1971 to discuss your renovation or construction project.
