Cold Shower? Low Water Pressure?
Signs Your Hot Water Mixing Valve Is Breaking
Hello Kingston! As winter temperatures sweep across the 1000 Islands, we receive a ton of calls concerning all kinds of plumbing issues be it home or business. Interestingly, two concerns we rhythmically receive during cold weather is that the water temperature (cold shower water) or the water pressure of ones shower(s) has become inconsistent or unreliable. These are items that are noticed more when taking a hot shower simply feels more important, but in fact isn’t occurring because of cold weather; it’s happening because your hot water mixing valve has stopped working properly.
John THE Plumber Kingston very much understands the unpleasant experience of a drippy or cold shower, so we’ve decided to share some tips on how to tell if your hot water mixing valve has stopped functioning as it was. Keep on reading and you will know for yourself if it’s a valve causing you to freeze while showering:
No Hot Water/Low Water Pressure
An unpleasant experience we have all encountered at some point is stepping into the shower only to receive a blast of cold water raining down on you – YIPES! It’s important to observe if you have no hot water but still have cold water running full tilt out of the showerhead, this is a strong indicator that your hot water mixing valve has stopped working. The possibility that your hot water heater has broken down also does exist, but more likely the culprit is your hot water mixing valve. Now if the water temperature feels normal but the pressure in your shower is lower than normal, your hot water mixing valve may have a clog. It is an option to temporarily remove the hot water mixing valve to clear out the clog, but we advise that you replace the valve at this point. Wear and time over time will cause damage as will corrosion does within these valves. It is best in the long run that you install a new hot water mixing valve should you develop a clog.
The Showerhead Is Dripping Warm Water
If you notice that you have warm water dripping from your shower head after you have turned off your water completely, then there is a problem with the mechanics of your hot water mixing valve. What often happens is the mixing valve ball shifts over time, and is no longer secured as it once was in the stem of the valve. As a result drips of water are able to squeak through and therefore this valve is not something you want to delay replacing. Just like a leaky faucet those drips can add up quickly and cost you a higher water bill that you would normally expect!
The Hot Water Temperature is Fluctuating
Another indicator of a hot water valve failing is if you take a shower and notice the temperature doesn’t remain consistent. You will find older model hot water mixing valves in older homes that age over time and with usage. One of the first signs of trouble is they begin to fail in correctly controlling water temperature. This can be rectified by installing current/modern plumbing features within your plumbing system that will balance and maintain the water temperature from fluctuating. If your live in one of those beautiful old homes in the Kingston area and this situation seems familiar to you, call John THE Plumber today and we’ll be happy to discuss which upgrade options will best serve your plumbing.
