Popular Plumbing Myths

We get a lot of phone calls. Our phone lines are always busy and we definitely have gone to some interesting job sites in our time. One of the things that always surprises us is that many people have these beliefs about their plumbing system that are quite often incorrect and more worrisome, can actually cause some pretty serious problems down the line. John the plumber Hamilton is going to share a few of the ones that we have heard and perhaps we can dispel a few of these myths with some true facts.

Plumbing Myth #1 – What You Flush

One of the biggest culprits is the idea that if it can fit down the toilet, it is flushable. You would not believe what we have dug out of toilets in our time. It is enough to write a small novel. The truth is that anything is not flushable. The only thing that should go down your toilet is, well, what the toilet is supposed to be used for. Wipes, food, sanitary products, paper towels etc should all go in the garbage can and never in the toilet. These can build up over time and cause we’re really serious problems.

Plumbing Myth #2 – Liquid Drain Cleaner

Next is that liquid drain cleaner is a great idea. Liquid drain cleaner is one of the worst things that you can use. The same stuff that is eating away at the debris is also eating away at your pipes. Drain cleaner can make pipes weaker and more susceptible to blocks in the future. On top of that, the chemicals are extremely harsh and the fumes are very toxic and they should absolutely not be used at home with small children or people of frail health.

Plumbing Myth #3 – Down The Drain

Another myth is that pouring grease down your drain with hot water is fine. Do you know what happens to grease once it reaches room temperature? It solidifies. And that’s exactly what it’s doing in your pipes. This one is sort of a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people throw just about anything down the kitchen sink. Garburators are also a problem. Many people think that if you can shove down the garburator, it’s good to go. This really is not the case, and there are many things that should never go into the garburator.

Plumbing Myth #4 – Small Leaks

A different myth among Hamilton homeowners is that a small leak or is no big deal. Small leaks can actually turn into a big leak very quickly. Small leaks also use up a ton of water. A running toilet will double or even triple your water bill in just one month. A tiny leak inside a wall can cause mold to grow and ruin your ceiling and wall. The small leak might be easy to fix but then you’ve got a lot of drywall repair and paint afterwards.
