Most Common Reasons
For this blog, we want to give you some ideas on what are the most common reasons you may have a water bill that has jumped up exponentially. The number one reason is the toilet. Even a tiny little leak or a toilet that is constantly running can amount to liters and liters of water a day. I had a customer call in recently with her water bill that had tripled in one month! The leak couldn’t even be heard. She never even heard it running! It took her crouching down and pressing her ear to the tank to realize that’s constant little hiss that she was hearing is actually money getting flushed down the drain.
Leaky Faucets
Of course, a leaking faucet is also a quite obvious source of a water leak. This won’t run your bill up the $400 range but you will definitely notice but it is higher than it should be. A quick comparison with your neighbors in Hamilton who have a similar-sized household will tell you if you’re within range or not.
Garden Hose Bibs
Another reason that we see in the spring and in the summer especially is leaking outdoor garden hose bibs. It might not seem like a lot, but that constant drip, drip, drip underneath your hose bib can amount to some serious dollars down the line.
Your Hot Water Tank
Hot water tanks also are a source of leaks. Relief valves have been known to constantly drip, causing your water meter your water bill to skyrocket.
A great way to test if you have an unknown leak somewhere in your house is turn off all the faucets and shut the main water valve off; this is generally located in your basement. The test is to see if the dial moves once water has been shut off to the house. If the dial on your water main is still moving, that’s an excellent indication that you’ve got a leak somewhere in your Hamilton house.
