It is Important to Test Your Water Regularly?
Most of us trust the water that comes to our pipes to be pure. Unless you find something unusual like an odd odour, or a different colour, you’ll probably assume that your water is safe to drink. But is it? From experience, we at John The Plumber, know that more often than not, the water is safe to drink. Water supply bodies are generally very diligent when it comes to maintaining the quality and purity of water. However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t test the water yourself. Here’s what you need to do.
What are the Contaminants that Can be Present in the Water?
There’s really no such thing as pure water. As a universal solvent, water will have several contaminants in it. However, the question is whether these contaminants are truly harmful or not. Here’s a list of contaminants that might be present in your water. Some of them are easily detectable, while others will need testing.
- Bacteria That Don’t Cause Harm – These aren’t really a problem, but during their lifecycle, they might release iron and sulfur into the water. This can make it unpleasant to drink.
- Disease Causing Bacteria – These are a serious problem and you don’t want them to be present in your water at all. If you or people in your family are falling ill and you don’t know the cause, you need to consider that there might be e. coli or coliform in your water. You might also have fecal streptococci or fecal coliform. None of these should ever be present in your drinking water.
- Iron – If your water is yellow or orange hued, the iron content in the water might be high. To some extent, this is alright. However, if you have too much iron in the water, it won’t be good for your health.
- Lead – Everyone knows that lead is very harmful to consume. If you live in an old house where the pipes haven’t been replaced for a long time, lead poisoning can be a big problem. Things like lead solder or old brass components in plumbing can cause serious damage to your health. If you’ve just purchased an old home, you need to test the water for lead.
We recommend that you test the water of your home once every few years to ensure it’s safe to drink.
