Kanatadrain is clogged

What to do if your Drain is Clogged

Clogged drains can become problematic quickly, and the first thought one often has is to use drain cleaner which can actually do more harm than good. Chemical drain cleaner contains powerful chemicals which can cause damage to your pipes which can create a much bigger and more expensive issue. John The Plumber cares to warn you all of you in Kanata about this common mistake so you don’t ruin your pipes, and has listed alternative steps to help if your drain is clogged below:

Take the Plunge!

If your drain is clogged and there is raised water, the first thing you can do is see if your plunger will do the job. There are no chemicals involved and it often does the trick, provided that you use it properly. It’s a good idea to rinse your plunger with hot water first as it will be more effective. Then put the plunger over the drain, ensuring that the drain is sealed and push down gently but firmly. Then vigorously pump the plunger several times, this creates a vacuum and should cause your drain to unclog.

A Natural Solution

If the plunger alone did not work and you’re thinking about heading to the hardware store to buy some Draino, look in your kitchen cupboards first! Take half a cup of baking soda and pour that down your drain. Then take a cup of vinegar and pour it on top of the baking soda. The two combined will cause a reaction similar to an “explosive” experiment you may have done in grade school science class – and it works!

Once the fizzing stops take some boiling hot water and pour it down your drain to further break down the clog. Depending on the size of your drain and the clog you may want to use larger quantities, just remember to use one part baking soda and two parts vinegar and you should get the reaction you are hoping for- and save your pipes at the same time!

Snake Your Drain!

A cable auger (commonly known as ‘a snake’) is another non chemical method that can be tried. It’s a coiled spiral tool that works in an opposite manner than a plunger. Instead of creating a seal and suction with a plunger, you push the auger down your drain into the obstruction to break it apart. What isn’t pulled apart and heads down the drain on its own, the snake will have it lodged in its coils when you pull it out, and you can dispose of the unwanted matter that way. If you do choose to go this route, caution is advise as it is quite difficult to use. When using a cable auger ensure you have slid it all the way down your pipe and then turn it clockwise.
