One of the most destructive things that can happen to your home is having a main line block. Main lines block for all sorts of reason, some of which we were outlining down below. There are some warning signs quite often beforehand and here at John the plumber Hamilton we are going to talk about them a little bit.
Your main line is essentially where all the wastewater in your house empties into and flows down and connect to the city sewer. Main lines block for all sorts of different reasons; depending on how old your home is and what materials they are made out of, counter sloped and mis-laid pipes etc. Perhaps they have been breached and fissures have been made by tree roots, rocks, dirt and other things that can damage the main line as the ground moves and shifts and settled over time. Older cast iron pipes are much more susceptible to this over time which is why they are not used anymore in Hamilton.
If you got a very bad smell or a blockage coming from a sink or toilet or a tub upstairs, especially if it’s more than one that is blocked, there is a good chance that you have a block on your main line, or at least somewhere where more than one drain line connects to. Here at John the Plumber Hamilton, we may recommend to do a snake that will eliminate that blockage, and hopefully that will be the worst of it. Wipes, feminine sanitary products, toys, dirt, rocks, tree roots – the things that can be blocking that main line can be many!
If your main line block is not noticed right away
Sewer water can start flowing back up into your basement and this can cause a heap of headaches – not only do you have a basement floor filled with waste water, you will have water that can very quickly ruin everything in the basement. Insurance will have to get involved and the things can get very pricey, very quickly. You may not even be able to live in your home while it was getting taken care of.
Always make sure that your main line is running well by visually inspecting it and making sure that the water flows through it. Making sure that there is no water ever coming up especially water that has any debris in it. Hamilton does have a lot of older homes and main line blocks are a common occurrence. The good folks at John the plumber can hopefully auger that drain and get it running. But, to avoid future issues, a camera inspection will be recommended so we can see what is going on in the many feet of pipe that run from your house to the city, and hopefully assist in never having to deal with main line issues again.
