Hey Hamilton, have you noticed the winter wonderland outside? One of the biggest plumbing issues that you might face in the winter months are frozen pipes.
What To Do About Frozen Pipes
Don’t panic when you find out a pipe is frozen in your home. You may end up doing something that will cause more damage and cost you more money to fix. Commonly, pipes will freeze if there’s a stead few days or so that are below freezing. One solution to this is to safely raise the temperature in your home near where the frozen pipe is located. This can sometimes only be a temporary fix if not done correctly, so if at any time you are unsure of how to fix you frozen pipes, don’t hesitate to give our Hamilton Plumbers a call.
It’s important to take note that frozen pipes can turn out to be much more then an inconvenience. When water freezes it will expand by up to 10% it’s volume. This can cause your pipes to crack or burst, likely costing you some expensive water damage repair bills.
How Can I prevent Frozen Pipes From Happening?
Having insulated pipes is a good start. Water pipes in cold basements, crawlspaces, attics, garages and pipes located near the exterior walls of your home may need protection from the cold winters we get in Hamilton. Wrap pipes in foam rubber insulation that is designed just for pipes. Be sure that there are no gaps between the pipe and the insulation. You may need to get creative around the corner pipes, again make sure there are not gaps. Duct tape can be used.
If you have any doubts or are unsure of how to install the insulation give our Hamilton plumbers a call. We’ll be glad to help.
