Pipe Freezing Orleans? What to Do.
If you live in an area such as Orleans ON, you know we get some extreme temperatures in the winter. With these temperatures all residents run the risk of pipes freezing in their homes. As the water in your pipes freeze, it can expand by up to 10%; this expansion can cause your pipes to split or possibly even burst. Should this happen the potential for water damage in your home can develop, not to mention the health risks your family could be subjected to if it’s not seen to quickly. In order to help prevent this from happening John THE Plumber has provided some helpful tips in this blog so you can alleviate the risk of pipes freezing in your home this winter.
Extra Insulation in Your Home
Adding some extra insulation to your basement or places where exposed pipes are located in areas like crawlspaces, attics, garages and outdoor taps will help. It will keep those areas a bit warmer which can help when stormy weather hits hard. This will make the water in those pipes less likely to freeze.
The Things That You Don’t Use In The Winter: Turn Them OFF!
Take a look at certain appliances and faucets around your home. If you have some that you don’t use much if at all during the winter months turn them off. Or if you’re going to be away for vacation for a while, then you’ll want to consider turning off your main water supply. This will aid in preventing damage to your pipes while you’re away. As well, you need to disconnect any outside hoses prior to the weather getting too cold. If left connected those hoses will freeze, and that can cause damage to the pipes inside your home.
Keeping Things Warm
Most of the plumbing in your home is hidden away in places nobody actually sees, and heat generally doesn’t reach these areas. Examples of this are pipes found under your sink in the kitchen or bathroom(s). If you open the cabinet doors every once so often (especially on harsher days) heat will have a better chance of circulating and keep those pipes warm.
