Orleans: What is a Mixing Valve?

Oh, hello!

John THE Plumber Orleans is here to talk to you about what mixing valves.

The running water you use in your home daily isn’t something anyone puts a lot of thought into. You know how to reach for the knob or lever that controls the flow of water into your sinks, showers and bathtubs. You know the option to get cold water, hot water or a combination of both is always present. Also, you know how to manipulate your individual taps to get the desired temperature that works for you. But DO you know the mechanics within your plumbing system that ensures you don’t scald yourself every time you turn on the hot water faucet?

What we are speaking of it a device called a “mixing valve”, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a plumbing device that controls the mix of cold and hot water to provide comfortable temperatures. The thing is these valves aren’t designed for your comfort. Without them turning on your taps can prove to be very dangerous.

Safety First

Here at John THE Plumber we believe in safety first! We’ve decided to teach you a little bit about these valves and how they work. This can provide additional protection from you scalding yourself by accident.

How Does a Mixing Valve Work?

The water in your home needs to be stored at high temperatures to prevent bacterial growth, causing a danger of scalding water to run from your plumbing to always be present. The function of a mixing valve is to regulate the mix of the water flowing. Be it from any showerhead or faucet that can cause you injury. To prevent this from occurring, a central thermostatic mixing valve is automatically in place. Its’ thermostat is preset, automatically closing a plunger and cuts off the hot water supply if the cold water supply experiences a sudden drop in pressure.

What is a Manual Mixing Valve?

Manual mixing valves do exist and can be installed in your washrooms and kitchen. But be advised that these will not provide the same level of protection that a central mixing valve does. A central mixing valve will operate on its own without any input from the user. So even if you opt for a manual mixer in some areas of your home, you should still have a thermostatic mixing valve to prevent an accidental bad burn/scald yourself.

As long as your mixing valve is working properly, you don’t have to fear of extremely hot water blasting out at you when you turn a faucet handle be it for showering or cleaning. The main thing is to take care of your plumbing. Take note of any changes that occur so you can rectify any problems right away.
