Tree roots, gravel, dirt and debris can cause cast iron pipes under the ground to crumble and become frail over time. Flushing things down the toilet which are not supposed to go down can also cause issues.

They can cut up tree roots, remove loose objects and even scrape the walls of the pipe to clear them out. Mini rooters can either push blockages through the pipe or pull them up.
