Spring Plumbing Issues

Happy New Year’s, neighbours!

Your favourite plumber in Orleans wishes you a fantastic year ahead, and we hope you’ve had an amazing holiday!

We know it seems crazy as we’re all getting knee deep in snow that we’re talking to you about the spring thaw. Thing is, as plumbers it is essential we stay ahead of the weather. Although we are all very happy to feel the weather turn warmer, the spring thaw can call on a host of spring plumbing issues. We are pleased to share any knowledge we have and feel some tips we have provided below will help you get ahead of any upcoming troubles where your plumbing is concerned.

Be Your Own Inspector

Inclement weather and ice clearly exists in Orleans, and cold temperatures can be very damaging to your pipes. When water freezes it expands and that can cause pressure inside your pipes which are very small areas. Those pipes can then split or crack, but you won’t know until spring arrives and the weather warms up outside. We always recommend doing a full visual inspection of your entire property inside out over the winter months while spring is on the way. Take note if any of your pipes are being obstructed, have snow buildup or even debris left from the fall season. Roof drains, sump pump discharge lines and pipes that lead to your outdoor taps as well as your garage are all ‘plumbing priority places’ that you should check and then continue to monitor over the winter.

Spring Plumbing Issues

Check You Sump Pump

Basement flooding is an unfortunate experience yet extremely common. We receive many phone calls about basement floods, and we’re to tell you many situations could have been avoided had the homeowner monitored the sump pump. Testing your pump to make sure it is running perfectly PRIOR to when the snow starts to melt is an excellent idea, and keep an eye on it as the spring thaw progresses to completion. Definitely a piece of equipment we never think much about, but believe us when we tell you that your sump pump is your best friend during the spring thaw in Orleans.

Run Your Taps

Running all your taps and making sure the pressure and the temperature is the same for the entire house is something everyone should do as well. If you have a pipe that is located on an exterior wall that is not insulated or improperly insulated, the cold can cause it to split. You’ll know this is happening when you notice you have a smaller/thinner stream of water when you turn on your tap or even no water comes out. By having turned on each tap and checked you’ll be able to quickly identify the source of the problem.

Winter can be harsh on your plumbing, and by doing the things we mentioned a homeowner can ensure that their plumbing is in good shape and ready for the big thaw once it arrives. If you are unsure about whether your home is ready for spring, or you’ve already discovered  “upcoming spring plumbing issues” please give us a call at John THE Plumber Orleans. Prevention and early detection can save you a bundle in the long run – Do Not Delay!

Test Your Drains

We all have several drains in our homes.

Some of these drains are used often, while others may go unused for weeks or months at a time.

You never know what time can do to your plumbing system, so we recommend periodically testing everything in your home! After all, plumbing issues become plumbing emergencies when we don’t expect them!

When testing your drains, you’re inspecting for two things: drainage and leaks.

If you have slow drainage, no drainage, or gurgling sounds, you may want to consider scheduling the best drain cleaning Orleans has to offer!! (Humble brag!)

If you have leaks, you’re probably going to want to hire the best plumbers in Orleans to fix it! (Psssssst… We’re good at fixing leaks, too!)

If you don’t notice any issues, congrats! This year is off to a rocking start!
