Basic Sump Pump

Keeping your Sump Pump Clean. Your sump pump should not be tested during the summer but during rainy season; it is only then you can know your sump pump is malfunctioning. Spring rains and water run off or in the fall are a good time to check out if it is pumping optimally. During these periods, the quick flow of rain water makes the water table rise; keep in mind some areas of Mississauga are certainly more prone to flooding than others. This article will look into way to clean up and prevent future water damage due to sump pump failure.

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Hence, regular maintenance of your sump pump can help prevent failure and significant water damage. If you have ever had a sump pump fail during a massive rain storm, you will know how easily this can happen.  One way to check out how your sump pump is working is to constantly check for built up debris in the sump pump which can hinder the float device in the sump pump from working properly. You need to test the float frequently as it can wear out over time, especially if your sump pump has to work often. The float allows the sump pump to start and stop as installed. It is essential that the float is in proper working condition for the sump pump to continue working normally.

Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners find out their pump is not functioning or is malfunctioning when it is already late. A non-functioning pump during rainy days could lead to flooding. As a result, it is advisable to have an extra battery backup sump pump on standby in case the main one malfunctions. If you live in and area where the power goes out frequently, this can be a life saver, or at the very least a basement saver.

Cleaning the weep hole regularly also is part of regular maintenance and keeps the sump pump works well. You can use either a toothpick or a small tool to remove excess debris in the weep hole. Whatever you do, make sure not to break anything inside the weep hole as this will hinder the proper functioning of the pump.

Additional regular maintenance includes the removal of leaves and stones in the sump pump liner, screen and filter. It is recommended that the sump pump drains are flushed with hot water regularly. This process ensures that iron bacteria colonies do not grow and multiply and removes debris that might obstruct the flow of water.

Once you must have installed your sump pump, you should follow factory recommended maintenance procedures. Do your maintenance checks annually, but doing it twice a year is highly recommended. Please don’t forget to buy an extra battery backup sump pump for your peace of mind… never know when you’ll need it.
