Oh No! A Sewer System Back Up
This is probably the nastiest topic of all plumber topics; a sewer system back up. It’s filthy, it’s expensive, it’s damaging and let’s face it – and it reeks! Yuck. There’s never a good time for this, and no, it’s never a relaxed person on the other end calling in and we don’t blame anyone – not fun!
Beyond damage to your home and the stench, this type of scenario poses a risk to you and your family via your water supply. Our Company is huge on providing plumbing tips that will help keep you safe (and save you a few bucks as well!). We’ve made a short list below of things to watch for that should tip you off you have something to handle before it gets out of control and you have a sewer system back up.
Main Signs Your Sewer May Be Blocked
- Your toilet whistles and gurgles at you; if it’s talking, something is wrong!
- Water is draining at a snail’s pace or barely/not at all
- The smell wafting through you home is like a dirty diaper
- You can actually spot algae growing right near your home ( this is for septic systems only )
Your Home, Septic Systems & Water Testing
We feel the need to talk about septic systems and water a little further. Contaminated water can come with a whole host of diseases. If your home has a septic system we can’t stress enough how much you need to test your water on a regular basis.
Locate The Clog ASAP
This is an important point as you may not be in as big of trouble as you think. The actual clog itself needs to be found, and sometimes you will see things that can happen with a full on sewer clog even when that’s not happening. If you see sewage back up in one area only, say the bathroom tub, but everywhere else is draining properly, then you more than likely only have a clog in that one pipe. It’s when you notice that all “plumbing holes/drains” have sewage backing up into them; that’s when you know something has gone wrong where your actual sewer is concerned. Beyond the inconvenience and smell, this is something you need to figure out ASAP – last thing you want to do is give the sewage more time to leak!
