Why Do I Have A Water Stain On My Ceiling?

Have you ever been lying on your couch and noted a water stain on the ceiling of your home? If you have you need to take action right away as this is indicative of a leak. Here at John The Plumber Mississauga we feel it’s important you know to recognize staining as a substantial issue that should never be ignored. If you do you are setting yourself up for a bigger problem than you already have – and with that will come higher costs to fix it!

Dry It Out

To rectify this situation, all areas that have been exposed to water damage need to be dried completely so water does not remain in the organic matter of the ceiling or your walls. Industrial fans may be required to dry out the area as much as possible, and your insurance company may demand that you do so. Pay attention and note if the wet area is drying; if a number of hours are passing and you do not see the water drying up, it’s time to call in the professionals!

Find The Leak

At this point it will need to be determined where exactly the leak is coming from, and sometimes trying to source out where the leak started can be quite difficult. Plumbers will cut multiple small holes inside your ceiling, and occasionally inside your wall as well. Once the leak has been found, the plumber will make repairs, and then you will need to call a contracting company to come and patch and paint over the holes that were made to put your home back to normal. As I’m sure you have gathered by now, sooner than later is best. You don’t want to wait until the water stain is all over your ceiling – the bigger the leak, the more damage done and the more expensive it will be to fix your problem.

Check Your Appliances

Something to take note of are your appliances. Many appliance companies strongly recommend that you do not operate their appliances while you are out. A washing machine or a dishwasher can dispel a lot of water in a very short amount of time. We have received many alarmist type calls over the years when someone has returned home and found water everywhere due to this type of a leak. Other times we’ve been called as water has been seen coming out of home light fixtures in a ceiling as the leak is coming from the upstairs washroom. To aid in preventing water damage, keeping an eye on your bathroom fixtures and their corresponding valves and pipes is a good habit to get into, sometimes you can spot and fix a tiny leak before any leaking or staining occurs.

If you’re unsure of the source of your leak and/or concerned about damage already done, give us a call at John The Plumber Mississauga and we’ll be pleased to come over and fix whatever situation you are experiencing!

TIP: Water stains that continue to grow over time doesn’t just mean a leak is spreading, it means the opportunity for mold to grow is present, and that can become a health hazard for your family – do not delay!
