In Need of a New Sump Pump?
The sump pump, that thing in the basement that hums sometimes. The hum is the noise it makes while it’s at work, and its work is to pump any and all excess water out of your basement and away from your home. It is your flood protector and needs to receive proper care and maintenance so it’s good to go when heavy storms or thaws hit. Kingston is no stranger to inclement weather; the 1000 Islands gets hit with every type of weather imaginable all year long. Here at John THE Plumber Kingston we care very much to know that you and your family home are dry and safe no matter what’s happening outside, so we wanted to talk a bit on tips that should make you think it might be time for a new sump pump.
Signs You May Need a New Sump Pump
It’s Old: It’s good to make a note of when you purchased your sump pump and tuck it away somewhere safe (do this for all major appliances!). Reason being is after a good ten years your sump pump may begin to not work so well. At this point you can have it assessed, but more than likely you’ll need a new sump pump.
It’s Noisy: A sump pump does make noise while it works; it’s a humming sound. But if you hear it a clangin’ or a rattlin’, chances are it’s seen its day.
It’s Blocked: It’s good practice to keep your sump pump covered as well as clean and rinsed. By doing so you are protecting your pump, specifically its float switch. Otherwise sediment and debris will build up sooner than later, and if your float switch is stuck, it will continue to run when it shouldn’t.
It’s Always Running: Your pump should only turn on with heavy water building up in its basin. If it’s running without water in there, good chance your motor is going to blow and then you’ll have no sump pump when you really need it.
It Cycles Randomly: If your sump pump is cycling but on a random basis, there’s a good chance your check valve has failed. What will happen there is your sump pump will fail at pumping water out when it should, meaning the water will remain in your basement and – you got it – you now have a flood to deal with.
